AMY KIRWIN BLOG: Skate park opens in San Marcos

On June 2, San Marcos held a ribbon cutting for one of the most used year-round parks in the community, the skate park. The anticipation from the youths had been building for 3 years- when they attended the first meeting to discuss what obstacles they wanted in the park.

The San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department initially was going to have a prefab park put in to help with the issue of skaters engaging in their sport on private property, public property, and on the streets. Two adult skaters, Brete Anderson and Aaron Arguien, addressed the Parks Advisory Board, asking them to look at a concrete park that in the end would cost less due to durability. From that meeting, Brete and Aaron recruited Amy Kirwin to help with the awareness and fundraising efforts to get the first phase built. Thus the Skate Park of San Marcos Action Committee (SPOSM) was formed and has become a non-profit organization to help raise awareness and funds for the skate park and formulated a skate team of locale skaters.

Located behind the Army Reserve building and close to the San Marcos Public Library, the 10,000 square foot concrete street area builds on elements found throughout San Marcos- most notably the Sewell stairs. SPOSM is working with the San Marcos Parks Department with improvements, expansions, and issues of concern.

The park is open dawn to dusk, and provides a safe, legal, and free place for skaters young and older. If you are interested in being involved or want to donate, please contact Amy Kirwin at patamy@grandcom.net.
