Tips from the public helped San Marcos police arrest a 23-year-old Canyon Lake man on a felony charge of taking photographs for sexual gratification without consent.

Police arrested Michael Aaron McDonald at his work place in San Marcos on Thursday, February 28, 2008. McDonald lives in the Hancock Hills Subdivision in Canyon Lake.

Police received over 20 phone calls, including 12 that identified McDonald from a February 25 press release seeking to identify the unknown suspect, said Commander Bill Glasgow.

The case began on February 22 when police responded to a call from the HEB store at 200 W. Hopkins. A female employee found a digital camera in the women’s restroom with video recording capabilities and reported it to her manager.

The manager called SMPD. Officers who responded found improper images on the camera taken at several locations. McDonald was not an employee of the store.

“The public’s response to the earlier press release was very helpful,” Glasgow said. “We also appreciate the media’s cooperation in releasing that information.”

Police served a search warrant on McDonald’s residence in Comal County and seized several computers, mp3 players and numerous CDs.

McDonald was arrested by San Marcos Police Thursday, February 28, and is jailed at the Hays County Law Enforcement Center under $150,000 bond. Improper photography is a state jail felony.

The investigation is ongoing and other charges are pending.
