Tighter show delivers non-stop action for race fans

Kyle, TX - Five year-old Graham Mueller and friends kicked off a night of racing at Thunderhill Raceway, Saturday. Mueller was celebrating his birthday with his buddies in the new Birthday Suite and given the honor of calling out “Gentlemen, start your engines” for the first race of the evening.

The production was run on a much tighter schedule than in the past. Saturday’s event featured the addition of time limits to each of the heats and features. This seemingly minor change meant a world of difference in terms of getting races started on time and getting fans back home in bed before the wee hours of the morning.

Once or twice the action was halted because of debris or oil on the track, but Thunderhill officials kept things rocking along with music, giveaways, and a very entertaining dance contest.

The smooth running production was great, but fans were there to see racing - and racing they saw. Favorites like Cary Stapp, the Aramendias (Carol and Steve), Steve Osborne, Terry Tschoerner, and Duane Toyne delighted their supporters throughout. Fans of the thrills and spills also saw plenty of action with bumping, spinning, broken bumpers, and even one driver tossing his snapped-off front wheel at another.

Those listening on race radio with their scanners, (tuned to 460.3250) heard everything from officials sorting out the lineups for restarts, discussion over who to fault for accidents, and even a couple of drivers exchanging heated words in the pit area after a controversial “jump” by one on a restart.
