Texas state takes 14th and 16th at NCAA Track and Field Championships on day 2

The Texas State men’s and women’s track and field teams closed out their 2008 season with Casey Cummings placing 14th in the men’s pole vault and Ikenna Obonna registering a 16th place showing on the final day of the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships.

Cummings cleared the opening height of 16 feet, 1 ¼ inches on his second attempt in the pole vault, while Obonna had a legal jump of 48 feet, 3 ¼ inches on his third attempt in the men’s triple jump.

The Bobcats opened the Midwest Regional with a pair of 11th-place finishes by Rebekah Vickers and Kemuel Morales on Friday as Vickers cleared 12 feet, 6 inches on her first attempt in the women’s pole vault, and Morales posted a mark of 53 feet, 7 ½ inches on his first attempt in the men’s shot put.

In addition, Katie Hanie had a 13th-place showing in the women’s discus after posted a throw of 155 feet, 10 inches and Jonathan Ochoa also finished 13th in the men’s javelin with a throw of 202 feet, 4 inches.

Ashley Austin had a mark of 17 feet, 10 ¼ inches in the women’s long jump, while Kevin Aje posted a time of 10.83 seconds in the second heat of the men’s 100-meter dash.
