Bobcat defeats James Dalthorp III on fifth playoff hole

HOUSTON - Texas State men’s golfer Guy Goodspeed came back from two down with three holes to play to force a playoff before sinking a birdie putt on the fifth playoff hole to defeat James Dalthorp III in the finals of the eighth annual TGA State Public Links Championship in Houston Sunday.

“I never give up,” Goodspeed said. “Bad shot? It doesn’t bother me. I just have to keep on going. Golf is a game of recovery.”

A par on 16 before a birdie on 17 by Goodspeed squared the match to force extra holes with Dalthrop, a member of the Tulsa men’s golf team. Both players made par on 18, setting up the playoff at the Memorial Park Golf Club. Goodspeed and Dalthrop went back to the first tee for their sudden death playoff, but each made par on the first four holes. Goodspeed then hit his approach shot on the 390-yard, par four fifth five feet from the pin to set up a birdie for the championship.

Goodspeed, the No. 20 seed in the tournament, led by a stroke after eight holes but fell behind by two when Dalthrop made consecutive birdies on 12 and 13. Both players parred the next two holes before Goodspeed mounted his comeback.

It marked the second comeback in as many days for Goodspeed, who also rallied in the semifinals by coming back from three down with nine holes to play, capping his comeback with a chip-in from 32 feet on 18 to advance to the finals.

The tournament marked only the second competitive event in over a year for Goodspeed, who redshirted at Texas State. He ended up playing 60 holes over the final two days of the tournament after advancing to the quarterfinals by winning two matches on Friday.

Goodspeed will be one of seven returners to the 2008-09 Bobcat men’s golf team.
