Bluebonnet Lions Club officers installed

An installation ceremony of the 2008-09 Bluebonnet Lions Club Board of Directors was held on June 17 at the Dunbar Recreation Center. Debra Sowards was re-elected as the club President.Under the direction of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organization, the Bluebonnet Lions have continued to serve the local community for the past 25 years. Members have worked on a variety of projects such as assisting local schools with hearing and vision screenings, providing children’s activities at Sights and Sounds, volunteering at local nursing homes, and more.

Through fundraising activities, the Bluebonnet Lions are able to provide college tuition scholarships, assist other local non-profit organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Hays County Area Food Bank, and the Hays Caldwell Women’s Center.

The club’s newest project, Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national non-profit organization that promotes early literacy by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. The Bluebonnet Lions, along with the support from other local service organizations are providing books to local pediatric Doctor’s offices for distribution to local children. ROR program provides the tools to help promote children’s developmental skills and later school success.

    Congrats to Kelli Whigham she is truly as asset to San Marcos. She gives so much to everyone around her.
