Community committee forms to meet 2009 SMCISD attendance zones realignments

When students return to school next year- fall of 2009-they will experience a realignment of grades and a restructuring of attendance zones. To address the challenges of the latter, the San Marcos CISD has organized the SMCISD Attendance Zone Committee made up of about 38 persons from a cross-section of the community. The committee met for the first time on July 28, and has scheduled about ten more meetings before the end of 2008. Three school board members are on the committee: Jesse Ponce, Kathy Hansen, and Margie Villalpando, along with Superintendent Dr. Patty Shafer. Assistant Superintendent Mike Abild facilitated the meeting. Larry Blair and Brent Alexander of School District Strategies were on hand to assist with any questions from the committee.
Abild stated that the committee’s mission is to develop, and present to the Board of Trustees for their consideration, six elementary attendance zones for the six elementary schools that will be in operation for the 2009-10 school year. Also, the committee must assign a middle school (either Goodnight Middle School or Miller Middle School) to each of the new elementary school attendance zones.
The committee reviewed a map of the four current attendance zones and the current and planned elementary school (yet to be named) and the middle school sites. Abild asked the committee members to identify priorities that they want considered while designing the new attendance zones, explaining that these priorities would be used by School District Strategies to develop the actual zones.
Some of the priorities identified included: balanced student counts, balanced special populations, balanced socio-economic groups, close proximity of campuses to neighborhoods, safest walking and bus routes, minimize travel time and distance, consider effect of future growth, and many others.
