Motorcycle Unit strives for safer streets

The City of San Marcos will introduce an expanded Motorcycle Unit Tuesday to the public from 5 to 6 p.m. at the north parking lot at City Hall, 630 E. Hopkins. The public is invited to visit with officers.
The primary role of the Motorcycle Unit is to make city streets safer by improving traffic enforcement, especially in school zones and neighborhoods, said Chief Howard Williams. The officers will work school zones in the morning and afternoon and neighborhoods at other times. Motorists illegally passing school buses will be a particular focus of the officers.
“We are trying to get more of our citizens and visitors voluntarily to comply with the traffic laws. Enforcement is often necessary to make that happen, and motorcycles are very efficient tools for enforcing traffic laws,” Williams said.
The motorcycles give officers greater maneuverability in traffic and are cheaper to operate than traditional police vehicles. “We are getting more enforcement for fewer taxpayer dollars,” he added.
Officers Delton Duggins, Ed Bradshaw, Danny Castillo make up the Motorcycle Unit. They have had specialized training for several weeks to emphasize safety and skills in handling the motorcycles.
The motorcycles are equipped with radar and laser speed detection equipment. The unit starts work on Monday, August 18.
