The Freshman Purple Rattlers took an early lead and cruised to a 34-14 win at home over the Bastrop Bears.

The team led by Quarterback Hunter Burttschell drove over eight minutes for their first score as Daniel Nieto dove in from the 1-yard line for a 6-0 lead, the PAT was no good.

The defense would start their domination as the Rattlers led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.

A 20-yard run by Erik Cortez would set up the Rattlers next score as Ryan Marin would outrace the Bears for a 24-yard touchdown as they extended the lead to 12-0 with 7:02 left until halftime. The PAT run was no good.

The line was bolstered by the play of Leron Hutto, but Tyler Till came up big on a fumble recovery with 5:16 left in the second quarter. However, the drive stalled after a fumble by Burttschell.

Till would step up big again as he would catch a fumble in the air and ramble 10 yards to extend the lead to 18-0 with 1:29 left until halftime.

Bastrop connected on a 65-yard pass play and adds the two point conversion to close the gap to 18-8 at halftime.

C.J. Gutierrez would step in as quarterback in the second half and engineer a 24-yard pass play to Jerome Harris and Cortez added the conversion to push the lead to 26-8 at the 4:01 mark of the third quarter. The lead would hold heading into the final quarter.

The Bears scored on a 3-yard run to close the score to 26-14 with 5:02 left in the game. But Burttschell returned as quarterback and he drove the team effectively down the field. Nieto would score from the 3-yard line to secure the Rattlers win 34-14 with a successful PAT at the one minute mark to close the books on scoring for the game.

Purple Rattlers Head Coach James Halatan said postgame, “We want to get better, the turnovers tonight are my fault, it’s on me, and we will get better together”

The freshman purple team plays next week at Lampasas.
