Homecoming Isn’t Kind to Rattlers

Friday night, the San Marcos High School Rattlers’ planned an evening of pomp and pageantry, and while they succeeded in that respect, homecoming week didn’t work out completely as planned. The Rattlers football team fell to the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars 48-14.
San Marcos won the coin toss and decided to defer to the second half giving the potent Cougars offense the ball to start the game. The Cougars marched down the field to the 22 yard line where they were held on an early 4th down attempt to give the Rattlers the ball. The very next play was fumbled by San Marcos and recovered by the Cougars. Running back Robert Clay took the ball in from six yards out three plays later to make the score 7-0 in favor of New Braunfels.
Lightning struck for the Rattlers in the form of Andre Ray, who raced up the left side for a 73 yard touchdown. That evened the score up at 7-7.
The back and forth scoring continued as Canyon took the ball 72 yards for a touchdown on the next drive, but an extra point was not in store. The Cougars lined up in the old swinging gate formation; the entire line lined up on the left hash mark with the center and holder standing alone at the extra point line. The ball was snapped to the holder who fired the ball to a running back standing across the field and he was in for an easy two point conversion. The well executed trick play put the Cougars up 15-7.
San Marcos stormed right back down the field. Canady dropped back and threw the ball down the middle of the field to a diving Andre Ray. The impressive 38 yard catch put the Rattlers in the red zone but also sent Ray out for the rest of the game. He left favoring his right arm and did not return. Scooter Walker pushed his way in for a four yard touchdown to make the score 15-14 and that would be the final points scored by the Rattlers all game.
Two more touchdowns before the half by Canyon made the score 29-14. As this was homecoming week the students then took the field. Senior slotman and defensive back Shawn Burkhart took home the honor of King. Ele Taylor was named Queen.
The Rattlers need a solid start to the second half to get the momentum back. Instead, the half opening kickoff was never picked up by a Rattler, both players thought it landed in the end zone for a touchback. The ball was jumped on by a Cougar for a quick touchdown. Only one second had ticked off the clock.
From there it was all running back Robert Clay and quarterback Tyler Denson. Clay unofficially had 93 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 20 carries, while Denson rushed for 140 yards on 19 carries while passing for 116 yards, accounting for three touchdowns. Overall Canyon scored seven touchdowns in only 13 possessions.
Aaron Canady led the Rattlers in rushing with 99 yards, while Andre Ray had 117 total yards on only two rushes and one reception.
The Rattlers are now 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in district play, with the Kerrville Tivy Antlers up next week in Kerrville.
