Texas State students take a stand

Congressman Lloyd Doggett came under pressured to vote “no” on HR1424, the Economic Stabilization/Bail Out Bill. Freedom Works, a student run organization at Texas State University that promotes capitalism and free market principles, urged students to get involved. The organization gathered at the free speech zone on campus and solicited signatures for a petition against the $700 billion bailout package on Thursday. Students took action and provided 146 signatures in total.

In a press release, Bobcat Conservative Coalition President Joe Delacerda, along with Texas State Junior Ian Price, and Senior Andrew McFarland weighed in on their concerns.

“We can’t give a blank check to U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson,” said Delacerda. “This bailout sends a bad message to people who acted irresponsibly.”

Freedom Works had posters on campus saying “Buck the Failout,” “Stop Blaming Capitalism,” and “Say NO to the Bailout.”

Price advised citizens to “practice your two-step because we’re all marching towards socialism.” McFarland jokingly said he would support the bailout if the government promised him a billion dollars of it.

Freedom Works rushed the signatures to Doggett’s Texas office in Austin after the petition drive. He represents the 25th District of Texas in the United States House of Representatives.

Doggett’s efforts failed in the House of Representatives after the bill was passed with a 263-171 vote. Doggett voted “no” on both Economic Stabilization/ Bail Out Bills that came before the US House of Representatives on September, 29, and October, 3. The first bailout bill HR 3997 failed in the U.S. House of Representatives with 205 votes for the bill and 228 votes against it.

    I doubt Doggett voted no because he believes in unfettered capitalism.

    Lila you can look up the US House of Representatives website and look for your self who voted for and against the bill. I checked it and it states Doggett voted against the bill.

    I’m glad to know someone at that school has common sense to know the bailout is a bad deal for everybody
