Gregson and Miers Meet With Kiwanis

Thursday, the Kiwanis of San Marcos held their weekly meeting. The group led by President Pam Cook hosted speakers Scott Gregson and Helen Miers. They spoke about a grass rotes effort to raise $25,000 for a grand piano for San Marcos High School and other issues within the city.
Gregson and Miers have raised $7,000 of the needed $25,000 and spoke about how much community support is needed in this pursuit.
Ted Breihan stepped up for the Kiwanis at the meeting and donated $200 in honor of Angus McCloud and asked other members to beat or match him, several members followed suit in an effort to make the piano more of a reality for the students of San Marcos High School.
Gregson also covered three other topics; community dialog, economic sustainability, and art/music education in our schools. Gregson, Co-owner of Newstreamz San Marcos, talked about how San Marcos is the best place to live in the world, and explained what limited options we have had to communicate with each other in this community. He noted that part of his vision was to create an outlet to further communication among our citizens. He added, ” this is local news about us, by us, and for us.”
Gregson also mentioned that we need, as a city and people, to grow internally and we need to educate our people to stay here and offer better jobs. He said, “we have what Austin used to be.”
Gregson also spoke about how important it is for us to make sure we educate our kids well. He also noted some interesting facts that art and music should go hand in hand with our children. Our kids are four times more likely to achieve academic success and three times more likely to receive perfect attendance awards if we introduce and get our children involved in the fine arts.
Helen Miers, Head of the Choral Department at San Marcos High School, was the second speaker and she spoke briefly on the upcoming production of Oliver! as well as an overview of upcoming events at San Marcos High School.
Miers said,” San Marcos was where I wanted to come; it is a diamond in the rough and a great place to be.” She told the Kiwanis that if you teach here you need to know the community and the university. She also spoke of the great facilities at San Marcos High School and the high level of talent here. Miers seconded the need for music education by pointing out the SAT scores in our music students are higher than the general population of the student body.
She told the group, “Music is math and math is music.” The music department at San Marcos can drive academics.”

In Rotary news they welcomed Robert Lucio, Executive Director, Community Council of South Central Texas, Josie Lucio, Campus Technologist at San Marcos High School and Candice Bethke, Spa Practitioner at San Marcos Laser and Body. Bethke also announced a partnership to help the Kiwanis raised needed funds through a donation program in her Mint Monday program. She said more will be released in a future press release.
The group noted that September 18 at 6 p.m. they will hold their annual Installation Banquet at the Price Center.

The San Marcos CISD will join neighboring Central Texas school districts to observe Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on July 16, 2008. District employees are encouraged to bring their children with them on that day to learn about their parents’ job duties and responsibilities. The day is designed for girls and boys across the area to think imaginatively about their family and the community, connecting what they have learned at school with the actual working world. Photo: Bryanna Rivas is getting a head start learning about what her mother, Roslyn Rivas, does in her position as secretary to the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. Bryanna enjoyed making and collating copies on the copy machine so much that she declared she wants to work for San Marcos CISD, too, when she grows up.

New head football coach at San Marcos Baptist Academy
Posted by Blake Doelle on July 1, 2008 at 4:05 pm • Print This Page • Share
Former Dawson High School offensive coordinator Brian Gaylor was recently announced as the new head football coach at San Marcos Baptist Academy. Gaylor will be taking over for Tim Georg, who resigned after six years at the helm of the Bears gridiron program to take a position at San Antonio Marion High School.SMBA athletic director Toby Wade said the Bears community is excited to have Gaylor on board and looking forward to the excitement he is going to bring to the football program.
“It was very clear from my first contact with Coach Gaylor that he was a devote Christian,” Wade said of the new head coach. “I don’t know that I can pin down the tangibles, although I hate to just say (it was a) gut feeling, but my gut feeling was that his personality was a great fit for our kids.
“I believe that he will demand a lot from our kids and push them but will do so the right way.”
Gaylor, who will be entering his first head coaching stint, will take over a program that is coming off back-to-back 4-7 campaigns under Georg. The Bears have made the TAPPS Division IV playoffs the last two years, but have been eliminated in the opening round each year.
The first-time head coach said he doesn’t think the late start is going to impact his first year with the Bears and added that he wants his players and coaches to expect to win immediately.
“I am extremely excited,” he said of taking over the Bears’ program. “I fully expect us to compete this year, and I know line wise we are losing everybody, but I’ve seen some of the younger guys, who have played on the line, and was very impressed with them, especially with how they would fit in a Slot-T.
“I feel like this year is no different than any other year other than the fact of having to teach the offense and defense to the coaches that are already there.”
Galyor has spent the last five seasons at Dawson High School. The last two years was as the offensive coordinator and the previous three years was as the special teams coordinator. He has also spent time at Hubbard, Malakoff and Atkins High School.
Wade said the hiring of Gaylor came as a bit of a surprise to himself after entertaining somewhere between 15-20 resumes and interviewing five finalists.
“I was originally pretty sure I would hire someone from a private school setting, but as I met with Coach Gaylor, I felt very comfortable that his public school experience was pretty relevant to our situation,” the SMBA athletic director said. “Very few coaches out there have boarding school experience, and boarding schools are a different setting for sure, but the school he comes from is a small school.
“The enrollment numbers and type of kids seems pretty similar. It sounds great to have a coach from a 4A or 5A public school, and those coaches provide some unique qualities and experiences, but they are also coming to an entirely different world when they come to a 4A TAPPS school, and I think frustration can set in when the reality of those differences set in.”
Gaylor said he was actually attracted to the SMBA program because of its unique student situations.
“Oddly enough the change in personnel every year was kind of exciting to me,” he said. “You never know what you are going to get. It’s a special case being a boarding school, but I think we can attract some kids.”
While the Bears suffered heavy losses in the trenches Gaylor did see some things that he liked from the game films he has seen to date, including several running backs that should take up the Slot T well next season.
When it all got boiled down however both Wade and Gaylor both said this was simply a good fit for both parties involved. The SMBA athletic director said he wasn’t so much worried about head coaching experience as he was finding someone with football knowledge that was going to be able to relate to the kids.
And Gaylor said the San Marcos area was just an exciting place to be and an area he and his family had wanted to be a part of for a while.
The Bears will kickoff the new Gaylor era on Thursday, Aug. 28 when SMBA travels to Medina for the 2008 season opener. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
